An idealized drawing of what the vesuvianite from near Clio, Plumas county, California looks like.   Flattened di-pyramids.

The following specimens represent the collecting efforts from over a dozen pockets from this locality.  All of the specimens were in small, 6" or so, to medium 12-18"  sized, pockets filled with dirt and sand...where the limestone had dissolved away and left the vesuvianite specimens loose in the pockets and covered with dirt/sand.  Any damage to the specimens was through natural processes and possibly damage from earthquakes.   Some of the pockets had the vesuvianite heavily covered with diopside that has weathered so severely that it falls off the vesuvianite in any type of cleaning process...essentially being rotten.  A couple of small pockets had diopside crystals on the vesuvianite that actually held together as discreet crystals of a light green color.

JC10973.  Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   4 x 5 cm   66g.  $40.00   Approximately 2.5 cm crystals.   Medium brown, lustrous crystals.  The terminations are mostly complete, which is a little unusual for the specimens from here.   One of the best miniatures.

JC10995.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   6 x 6.5 cm   146g.  $40.00    3.5 cm crystal.   A two sided piece, not sure which is best.   The main crystal seen here is complete except for where other crystals have grown against it, restricting the growth there, as can be seen on the left side of the crystal, as a sort of whitish area.   The same growth interference is present on the lower front of the big crystal.   Glassy luster on the complete faces.
JC10995.  Reverse.  Diopside, now rotted away has left the face with small tiny pits in the crystal.   The lower center crystal is complete.
JC10996.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 6 cm  181g    $45.00   4cm main crystal.  This one is from the pocket that had a secondary growth of sparkly orangish brown vesuvianite on the main brown vesuvianite crystals.    The crystal is about 50% complete, with a portion missing on the left front where another crystal was growing on the main crystal and has been broken off.     The bottom one third of the crystal is missing.
JC10996.  Back side.  The back side of the crystal has been coated by a secondary layer of orangish brown sparkly vesuvianite.   The big crystal is pretty much complete underneath this secondary coating.
JC10997.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 7 cm  201g.   $30.00   3 cm crystals and smaller.    Brown crystal with good bright luster.  Several of the crystals have had their tips of one face edge broken off, leaving them partially incomplete.

JC10998.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 6 cm  122g.   $45.00    2.5 cm main crystal.  The main crystal, on the top of the specimen is complete with no broken corners; the satellite crystals are mostly complete also.    The light area on the lower left portion is incomplete growth, where another crystal, now absent, grew against it.   A little pitting is present as white spots where another mineral grew and is now gone.
JC10998.  Back side.
JC10999.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 8 cm   200g.   $38.00     1.8 cm and smaller crystals all over this piece.  The edges of the crystals are a little rough, maybe due to jostling in the pocket it was found in...gives the edges a slightly raggedy look.

JC11000.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 8 cm   273g.  $35.00   5 cm and smaller crystals.  These are a little stouter than average, and an odd greenish color.   Crystal are about 70% complete, as they are partially broken off on the back side.    Has an odd beige color zoning on the edges of the crystals.     RESERVED
JC11000.   Slightly different angle and lighting.
JC11001.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5.5 x 6.5 cm  159g.  $40.00    5 cm and smaller crystals.  Just to the right of the upper face termination is a small area, few mm across that has been broken/chipped; visible in this photo.  Some of the tips on the smaller crystals in front are missing.   The main crystal is about 75% complete, with the bottom 1/4, visible on the back, missing.

JC11002.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 7.5 cm  171g.    $25.00    3 cm main crystal.   A lot of growth interference on this one.  The main crystal, easily seen here, has had the top corner cleaved off.    The right edge, where the white is, is incomplete growth.   The white crystal on the extreme left edge appears to be an albite crystal, but has not been analyzed.
JC11003.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   5 x 8 cm  249g.  $40.00.    3.5 cm and smaller crystals.  This is one of the ones from a single pocket that had a lot of beige/orangish brown secondary growth on the crystals.  It appears to be vesuvianite, but has not been analyzed.    The crystals are mostly complete.   The whole specimens looks a little lighter in color than the photo would indicate.

JC11005.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   6 x 8.5 cm    362g.    $50.00.     4 cm and smaller crystals.   The main crystal, as well as the entire specimen is a slightly orangish beige rather than the greenish look the camera gave the photo.    The main crystal on the right side has had the back side partially etched away by later dissolution apparently.    One of the larger crystals on the upper left has had some growth interference so it is not complete.  Luster is bright where the secondary material is not present.

Clio, Plumas county, California.   6 x 6 x 8 cm  422g.   $50.00   2 cm and smaller crystals.   Most of the crystals are on the front, although there are some on the back side also.    Some of the crystals on the front have had the tips of the corners chipped, probably from jostling in the pocket.    Luster is bright.

JC11013.   Vesuvianite, diopside.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.    5 x 6 cm  91g.  $40.00   5 cm crystal.   The crystal has been partly covered by diopside crystals growing on the face and actually eating into the face a bit, leaving small pits where the diopside crystals have weathered out.  The vesuvianite crystals are about 2/3 complete. The right lower side of the main crystal has been broken off...it is the part without diopside on it in the photo.     Luster is bright where there is no diopside.

Clio, Plumas county, California.   6 x 8 cm   175g.  $60.00     5 cm crystal.   Diopside that has rotted/leached away, has left small pits on the crystal. The large, main crystal is about 2/3 complete, the base of it never formed.  The left side near the top is not completely formed.  It is not broken, just never formed...may have been due to another crystal growing against it.    Back side is also pitted, presumably from where diopside grew and has been leached or rotted away.

JC11017.   Vesuvianite.  Nr. Clio, Plumas county, California.   4 x 5 cm 73g.    $25.00.   Mostly complete crystals heavily coated with diopside residue.  The actual diopside crystals for the most part fell apart or were leached away, leaving this poorly crystallized residue, that has actually eaten into the vesuvianite.  3 cm crystals.
